Conductive Container Materials
- Metal tanks – excellent conductivity allows static charges to flow freely and dissipate safely.
- Specialized plastics – manufacturers incorporate conductive materials or anti-static additives to increase surface conductivity and prevent dangerous charge accumulation.
Grounding & Bonding Systems
- Grounding cable – attach to a bare metal part of the tank before any fuel transfer begins.
- Bonding – connect the tank to the receiving equipment so both share the same electrical potential, eliminating the risk of a spark jumping between them.
Safe Fueling & Flow Control
- Place tank on the ground during filling – never inside a vehicle or trailer.
- Nozzle contact – keep the dispensing nozzle in continuous contact with the tank's opening to maintain an electrical path.
- Slow flow rate – manually control fuel flow at a slow rate to minimise friction and splashing.

- Discharge before approach – touch a known grounded metal object at a safe distance before opening the fuel cap.
- Anti-static clothing & footwear – wear appropriate PPE to continuously dissipate residual charges generated by movement or friction.
