Chemical Stabilizers & Additives
- Antioxidants, metal deactivators, corrosion inhibitors – added to fuel to prevent oxidation, neutralise catalytic ions, and protect the system.
- Treat upon purchase and re‑treat annually – extends useful life and maintains engine specifications during long‑term storage.
Controlling Temperature & Light Exposure
- Cool, shaded location – use reflective coatings on the tank to minimise heat absorption.
- Stable temperature – avoid wide temperature swings to slow down oxidation and gum formation.
Managing Moisture & Microbial Growth
- Airtight and elevated tank – prevent condensation and water ingress.
- Regular water drainage and biocides – remove accumulated water and eliminate bacteria/fungi that cause corrosion and filter plugging.
Inventory Rotation & Filtration
- First In, First Out (FIFO) – consume oldest fuel first and label containers with purchase dates.
- Filter before use – remove settled sediments; avoid pumping from the very bottom of the tank to prevent drawing contaminated fuel.
